Salon as Assemblage

The end of summer marks the conclusion of 798's "season of group exhibitions." What, then, is the purpose of staging one at the tail-end of September? What questions can itcontinue to explore? Rather than aiming for a tidy exhibition aesthetic or a highlyunified collection of works, Salon as Assemblage seeks to confront the ever-presentindeterminacy of artistic practice: how a painting provisionally takes shape through theongoing work of looking, revision, and setting aside-and by whom, when, and wherea work is declared finished……

She holds aPh.D. from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and earned her master's degree from theAcademy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University. Guo Hongwei

Guo Hongwei (1982, Sichuan) graduated from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2004 andcurrently lives and works in Bejjing. He explores the multiple meanings of the act of "seeing" from the depiction of nature history objects, and the intertextual reference to vision and fantasy. By investigating different visual systems and switching between media such as watercolor and oil painting, the artist searches for paradigmatic differences in the order of painting.

He Peijia

Peijia He (b.1997, Hangzhou, Zhejiang) graduated with a bachelor's degree in New Media Art from Beijing Film Academy in 2019 and a master's degree in Oil Painting from Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2023, currently pursuing a Doctoral degree at Central Academy of Fine Arts. Her practice is grounded in an investigation of the ontology of images and the narratives that operate beneath them, unfolding through sustained experimentation with painting and moving image. She engages motifs charged with intimate personal memory and broader symbolic resonance, processing found images through painting, and positioning painting as both a critical method and a generative apparatus extending into moving image and image production, reflecting on the complex entanglements between images and personal as well as collective memory, emotion, and perceptual structures.

Huang Juan

Huang Juan, born in 1991 in Chongqing, China, received her M.F.A. from the Oil Painting Department of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2016.

Huang Juan works primarily with painting. Moving between abstraction, figuration, and psychological narrative, her works often draw on everyday images, bodily fragments, layered colors, and ordered compositions to explore emotion, violence, discipline, and illusion. Her paintings reveal how desire, pressure, and absurdly entangled realities act upon the body and leave their traces. Through semi-abstract diagrams and an intuitive, light pictorial language, Huang transforms personal perception into a sustained reflection on social structures and conditions of growth.

Huang Mingda

Mingda Huang, born in Manila in 1997, graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts with an MFA in 2023. His practice spans painting, installation, and various media of art. Most of his work reflects personal experiences, drawing inspiration from a wide range of sources, including cartoons, fables, primitive architecture, living organisms, and short videos. His work explores the perception of color and structure as well as the essence of painting itself; when facing the canvas, he acts less as a creator and more as a humorous observer. Within a non-binary context, he is also interested in constructing complex narratives and creating diverse possibilities for both two-dimensional and spatial storytelling.

Li Qianyu

Qianyu Li (b.1995, Inner Mongolia) is currently doing a Phd at Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa. She received her BFA from School of Visual Arts (New York, US) in 2020 and MFA from Slade School of Fine Art (London, UK) in 2022. Her art practice explores the connections and disconnections among things with the philosophic perspective of "three in one", reflecting on the differences in perceptions of reality and its different dimensions arising from personal living experience in diverse geographical and cultural environments. Her work is mainly presented as diptych painting/ installation, the two-part format expands beyond the single picture plane of traditional painting, disrupting the painting space and narrative space. There is an increasing significance in the relationship between the two independent parts and their physical relationship with the viewer, enhancing the wholistic and interactive experience of the artwork, providing an open space for imagination and multi-perspective discussion.

Liu Ourui

Liu Ourui, born in 1985 in Liaoning, China. Received his BA from Studio No.1, Oil Painting Department of Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in 2009. Lives and works in Beijing. His visual language is both absurd and authentic; beyond the storm-like clamor, it incorporates subtle, discordant notes that invite viewers to pause, hold their breath, savor the moment, and dance along with it. Intense energy and emotion intertwine and ebb and flow amidst dazzling colors, like a forest of thought brimming with boundless imagination and instinct. At the core of his work lie a vast art historical legacy, his personal growth, and a keen insight into painting. In his passionate creative process, these elements continually fuse, collide, and struggle to generate a force that drives him ever upward.

Lv Song

Lv Song (born in 1982) graduated with a master's degree in oil painting from Wimbledon College of Art, University of the Arts London, in 2006. He returned to China the following year and currently lives and works in Beijing. Through abstract brushstrokes, hazy tones, and surreal compositions, Lv Song's works blur the boundaries between reality and fiction, prompting viewers to reflect on time, memory, and existence. His works often feature mistshrouded landscapes and atmospherically dense spaces, presenting a "sense of frozen motion" that seems to capture fleeting moments. Although they appear static, the bold brushstrokes and rich layering suggest the flow of time. The artist favors low-saturation gray tones, which, combined with subtle shifts in light and shadow, create a tranquil yet detached atmosphere. In terms of creating methods, Lv Song breaks through the boundaries of traditional easel painting. Through a combination of techniques such as scraping, rubbing, and splashing, he imbues the texture of his canvases with weathered marks resembling geological deposits—like the engravings of time—reminding us of the inevitability of forgetting and the fragility of matter.

She received her BA in Theatre, Film and Television Art Design from The Communication University of China in 2015, and her MA in Image and Symbolic Language from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2018. As a visual artist, Qi Le explores the subconscious through a multidisciplinary practice encompassing painting, stop-motion animation, and sculpture. Her work bridges contemporary perception with childhood mountain experiences, responding to themes of memory, intimacy, and dreams. Her paintings navigate a closed hallucinatory system; the brushstrokes are dynamic yet rhythmically restrained - a paradoxical testament to a sense of alienation from reality. In her uncanny landscapes, flora and flesh mirror each other, whispering the fragile essence of existence like drifting catkins. The wild white strawberries of the barren mountains serve as her countless, familiar avatars, carrying the weight of maternity, intimacy, and turbulence: they are the concrete manifestations of life’s yearning to sprawl.

She enjoys depicting children in her work, capturing seemingly trivial moments from daily life and amplifying the emotions radiating from her subjects through the act of painting. Her works are often completed flat on the ground, using a variety of media as her brushes, deliberately introducing a sense of discomfort—free yet uncontrolled—into her practice

In 2016, he entered the graduate program and dropped out the same year. He currently lives and works in Beijing. He works across installation, performance, video, sculpture, and painting. He is adept at using "excess products" generated by the modern world—a perpetual waste-making factory—and "leftovers" found in resale shops, flea markets or on the streets. He concerns how the complex social structure has determined social status and eaten up individual identities. By decomposing ready-made objects and reassembling them in tandem or keeping them perfectly in balance, Tong aims to demonstrate the individual consciousness behind the objects as well as the multiplicity and fragility of the system. In an era when commodity fetishism and symbol consumption are prevalent and information is overloaded, Tong's work extends beyond formal boundaries of reconstruction and presents it in a quirky and seemingly absurd manner.
